Through an intensive engagement with tile objects, I no longer approach the tile as a modular building unit, but as the starting point for three-dimensional wall bas reliefs that exist between wall object, sculpture, and painterly relief. My formal explorations draw on urban structures—grids, reliefs, and façades—captured through photography and drawing, which I abstract and translate into ceramic forms. Surface, image, and material unfold as interconnected fields, shaping the aesthetic presence of the work.

A vase is never merely a container. As Georges Braque once said, the vase gives form to emptiness: ever since the earliest human civilizations, this object has had a purpose that is greater than its function and it perennially invites experimentation in shape and expression.

During my 12-day solitary artist residency in an abandoned furniture warehouse, I intended to use space and time as an incubator between vacancy and utilization.
I posed the question: what happens in a process of omission to one's own approach, relation, and expression in art?
How does one curate their own space to remain touched and moved, and to experience encounter and resonance?
It involved engaging with existential isolation, where one repeatedly meets oneself.
A play of closeness and distance, trust and connectedness, autonomy and authenticity.
Manifested in objects that stand on their own and yet develop their full power in recognizing the whole.
An out-of-the-ordinary exhibition demonstrating how fantasy can work endlessly on a single subject, and how beauty can take the most varied forms through different techniques and materials. 1000 VASES presents unique pieces made by hundreds of independent designers from 40 countries. in an extraordinary journey around the world united by the design of a small yet fundamental object.

about
Ena Kirchner, born in Austria in 1990, is a Vienna-based artist, designer, and craftswoman. She is trained as an architectural technician and completed her studies in Design and Product Management at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences in 2013.
Ena's several years of professional experience in the conceptualization and design of spatial projects introduced her early on to the interplay between people and their environment — an interest that continues to shape her artistic practice.
A hands-on, design-driven approach to life has accompanied Ena since childhood. She grew up in a clay and timber framed house built by her family, where she first came into contact with materials such as wood, leather, and paper in her father’s bookbinding workshop. These early material experiences laid the foundation for her strong affinity for craft and making.
Ena’s artistic practice consciously operates in the field of tension between sculpture, architectural fragment, and spatial installation. It is driven by a deep interest in material aesthetics, spatial perception, and the cultural traces embedded in urban structures. Ceramic material serves as her central means of expression, with the production process itself playing a formative and essential role in the final work.
A natural and authentic attitude toward life and work is Ena’s primary source of inspiration and is reflected both in her choice of materials and in her working methods. She predominantly works with high-fire stoneware—an aesthetically raw, tactile material—mixes her own glazes, and experiments with clay, sand, and locally sourced found materials, which she integrates directly into her pieces.
Ena combines work on the potter’s wheel with hand-building and slab techniques, focusing on time-intensive unique pieces as well as small-scale series. Simple geometric base forms are paired with decorative and pictorial elements. Her approach to form is intuitive and contemplative. Her sculptures and objects unite corporeal materiality with fine detailing and consciously employ space, void, light, and shadow as integral design elements.
Ena works and teaches in her studio in Vienna’s 14th district, where she also exhibits and sells a selection of her works.
